Professional appearance
What does "professional appearance" really mean?
Everyone wants to be thought of as "a class act". We want to be viewed as competent. We want to feel valued. Everyone wants to live successful, enriched and fulfilled lives.
It isn't easy in today's world, especially if you are trying to balance work, family and personal goals at the same time. How can you achieve a professional appearance when you have so many things tugging you in different directions?
One of the best ways to tackle the balance issue is to work on one aspect at a time until you achieve the harmony you are searching for. When you get it right, it will feel right and you will know that you are doing what you need to do in order to have harmony in your life.
The focus of this article is on you and the importance of looking your best. There is no question that we are all judged on our appearance (whether it is right or not, it happens all the time). If you take the time to make a good impression on others, you'll accomplish two things:

Exercise
If you are feeling a bit out of touch, are re-entering the workforce, need a gentle lift up or just want to be your best, here are some tips for ensuring your professional appearance is at its very best.
Of course, walking isn't the only form of exercise, but it's the easiest and if it becomes obvious that you reap many benefits from something as simple as walking, then you can imagine what swimming, rowing, jogging or handball might do for you.

Grooming
Yes, it sounds like something you would hear in a pet store, but it is an essential part of a professional appearance. You have to take care of yourself and that includes making an effort to look good. Please note, that sentence didn't say, "Look Perfect". It said that you need to make an effort to look good.
What does grooming entail? It includes your hair, nails and teeth. That goes for women and men. If you take care of the basics, you will make a great presentation to others. Get your hair cut/trimmed regularly in a style that suits you and is easy to manage. Keep your nails to an average length and if you are a woman, only use subdued colored polishes. Save the bright red for your evenings out. Women, applying makeup so that it looks natural, yet highlights your best features, is what professionals expect in the workplace. As for your teeth, well…. Brush them, floss them and let the dentist have a look at them every 6 months.

Work Attire
What clothes you wear to work depends much on the environment you work in. Take a look at what your contemporaries are wearing and dress to fit in. Err on the side of conservative, if you have to make any difficult choices. Keep your garments clean and pressed and remember that you are working to earn a living, not get a date. A professional appearance is so important.
Making an effort to look your best at work will offer many rewards, not the least of which is a boost to your self-confidence. Spend some time each week working on each of these areas until you are certain you have the balance and professional look that you are striving for. Each step will bring you closer to the person you really want to be.
Good Luck!
